Haha, someone tipped me off that the author Eric Nylund was wearing a shirt of mine in an interview for the new Halo Waypoint on XBox Live.

Went and checked it out and...yup, he's wearing Monster Battle from designbyhumans!

For Sale on Etsy

Also! Visioluxus/Elisa Lazo de Valdez is having a print sale, including a bunch of the photos I've posed for!

Trust me, as beautiful as her pictures are online, they are even more vibrant and lush in real life. I have a small collection of her work and it is just breath-taking.

I'm always amazed at the detail I can see in these macro shots that can't be seen with the naked eye. This yarn looks totally smooth without magnification!

Bellen! Sharks!

  • Nov. 6th, 2009 at 8:36 AM

I think I just wanted to draw sharks.  Cause they are messed up, dude.

Another animal I like is cats!  I have two.  One named Louis and one named Buster, they are both girls.  I know of an awesome cat named Paisley that has a website and livejournal.  She does an auto-bio diary strip.  It’s fantastic.

Tomorrow night I'm off to the opera. I'm going with an actress from the Twilight movie. This world is crazy. Someone should give it therapy.

At the same time I'm working on two projects that have no home. One is a kid's book that isn't for kids and the other is the bible for people who aren't religious. Yep. I'm a marketing genius. And by genius I mean idiot.

Waiting each week to hear if the New Yorker buys a cartoon is stressful. We send (ie. fax) off our stuff on Tue and usually hear back by Thur. Relative to other magazines they're amazing. Still. Stressful. I did feel like I had two good comics this week. Last week was weak. Apart from the discipline of banging out 10 cartoons a week and the subsequent improvement in my cartoons, my favorite aspect of the gig is making friends with the other gag cartoonists.

Last night I was at a bar drawing cartoons and some artist guy started talking to me about cartoons. I couldn't bring myself to say that I was cartooning for the New Yorker. I told him that I drew the cartoons and then tried to sell them to various magazines. He wanted to be a cartoonist. I didn't want to sound like I was bragging and I didn't want to make him feel bad.

Well, I already broke one of my guidelines for this project-- that the picture should be completed within one hour of getting to the studio. This one was at least one-and-a-half if not two. It was all those stupid little suckers! :|

They're not teeeeeeribly exciting, but here's the only two pictures that actually turned out alright from yesterday's adventure to Sock It To Me.

I am an (ok) teacher!

  • Nov. 5th, 2009 at 10:05 AM
I spent this week totally re-organizing and cleaning out my studio, so I'm sorry I don't have a proper comic for you guys (but I've started one). Instead, I thought I'd share some of the work being done by my 10-year-old comics students, and some of my thoughts on teaching comics to kids. (Also, if you'd like to see the first five handouts I made for the class, you can read them here)

My students are just brilliant. I have nothing to do with it. )

Man, kids comics are absolutely the best.

Bellen! Forwarders

  • Nov. 5th, 2009 at 7:18 AM

Seriously though, don’t forward political things unless you are 100% positive the other person agrees with you.  It’s FAR more annoying than any other kind of spam.

Green Lady drawing

Got a late start to the day, so the morning drawing is more like an afternoon drawing.

Why was my day so late-starting? Because Dylan and I tagged along with Rich and Meredith to visit the Sock It To Me warehouse! Wow. So many socks.
